2004 Lailey Vineyard
Cabernet Franc Canadian Oak VQA
The
release of 2004 Cabernet Franc Canadian Oak marks the fourth vintage of
Canadian oak wines at Lailey Vineyard. We continue to appreciate the nuances
of our homegrown oak and to delight in its particular contribution to
each vintage. We particularly like the subtlety and complexity that Cabernet
Franc exhibits when it has spent time resting in the stalves of local
oak.

Oak page of the Lailey Vineyard web site to learn
about the wood's evolution from trees in a grove in Ancaster to wine barrels
in the cellars of select producers throughout the wine world.
technical
note
Grapes for this wine were harvested from the oldest block of Cabernet
Franc at Lailey Vineyard. After crushing, the fruit was put into a small
fermenting tank and yeast was added. The cap was manually punched down
twice daily until fermentation was complete, after which the wine was
pressed off the skins and transferred to barrels where it underwent malolactic
fermentation and eighteen months of aging. The wine was then egg white-fined
and bottled unfiltered.
winemaker’s tasting note
Raspberry and cherry on the nose with spice and
tobacco notes. The palate has rich raspberry and currant flavours with
hints of cedar, vanilla and coconut. The wine is balanced with some grainy
tannins and a long finish.
We
made only 50 cases of this wine.

Lailey
Vineyard Cabernet Franc has a good track record...
In January 2007 Jancis Robinson wrote
of her recent Canadian tasting experience,"...it did seem to
me as though the best wines were made by quite a small number of superior
producers, I tasted about 70 wines in all,17 of which I felt were
world class wines from any point of view."
She placed Lailey Vineyard squarely in the top ten with her review
of the 2002 Cabernet Franc Canadian Oak:
Very impressive, dense nose. Confident and dry, spreads across the
palate. No concessions to sweetness and modernism.
